More About Fibromyalgia

Hello friends! I want to thank everyone for their comments on my blog. I have alot of different issues going on in my life-(don't we all?!) so I will be sharing the as much as I can.

Someone asked me how and when I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. Well, it happened like this:

I was on one of my favorite websites, webmd.com and reading different articles about cronic pain, trying to figure out what was wrong with me. I came across Fibromyalgia and read the symtoms. I just about fainted (not literally) when I read the symptoms, one by one I kept saying, hey, I have that, or I feel that way, and started thinking maybe after all this time I can actually find out and put a name to what has been going on with me. You see, I had had some of symptoms for years--i,e the tender points, not knowing what the heck it was. So I just kept reading and reading to get all the info I could about it. I even printed out some of the things so I could show it to my doctor. So when I went in to see her, I showed her the print out, and told her I think I have Fibromyalgia. She said ok, and went through the symptoms according to the information she had and when we finally finished the interview, if you will, she agreed with me, and diagnosed me as having Fibromyalgia. There was no bloodwork involved because so far there are no blood tests to give for this syndrome. She prescribed Lyrica, the new drug the FDA approved for it. So now I take that, and it works pretty well. I don't feel so stiff when I first get up in the morning, and I seem to feel lighter and have more energy! It doesn't cure it, only makes it more manageable. She also prescribed Ultrum, a medication used to help stop pain for arthritis. I take the Lyrica at night and the Ultrim in the morning. The medication helps me to be able to funtion and ride my bike! So I am happy about that. I read that exercise will help Fibrmyalgia, and I thought about which form of exercising would be right for me. I started reading about Bicycling at the About.com website and started really getting interested in getting back to it again-after 10 years. So I am excited about it. My husband and I bought some bikes, and I started my exercise plan. It's easier for me to do this form of exercise because I can sit down! I have discovered that bicycling has given me more energy, which makes the Fibro manageable. One of the symptoms of Fibromyalgia is severe fatigue, so to have more energy is a great blessing!

I hope you all have a great week! Hugs from Diana

Fibromyalgia and Bicycling

Technorati Tags: exercise,Fibromyalgia,pain,bicycling, tender points

As I mentioned in a previous post, I have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, which is a syndrome characterized by widespread pain throughout the body. It affects the muscles, plus other areas of the body like neck, legs, and back. There are tender spots in various parts of the body. If these tender spots are touched, they feel like a bruise, even though there isn't one. Another symptom is extreme fatigue. There are a lot more, but I'll stop here on that to get to my point.

The experts are saying that exercise is one of the best ways to manage this condition. I'm not one that can stick to exercise for long, so I needed to find an exercise program that would be doable for me for many, many years to come. So to make a long story short, I got into bicycling because it's a fun way for me to exercise, and something I can continue to do to old age. Cycling has many benefits. I believe it helps the Fibromyalgia in that I am feeling more energetic. Not to mention that I have lost weight, which we all know is definitely beneficial!

For the next week the weather in my area is suppose to be excellent. 70 to 80 degree with sunshine. So my riding partner and I are going to take advantage of this wonderful weather, and ride every day that we can. Cold weather will be upon us soon, and I'm not sure how my biking is going to work out then. When it gets too cold to ride outside I plan to buy a stationery bike. I want to keep my exercise program in full throttle all winter, so when spring comes around, I'll be in great shape, and be able to tackle some of those hills I come to with my bicycle with ease.Yes, I believe bicycling is my niche--my very doable and fun exercise program that I can stick with until I'm 100 and beyond! I'll be fit and healthy and my Fibromyalgia will be better. This is my long term goal.

Thanks for reading, and hugs from Diana

Fibromyalgia

I have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, which is a syndrome characterized by widespread pain throughout the body. It affects the muscles, plus other areas of the body like neck, legs, and back. There are tender spots in various parts of the body. If these tender spots are touched, they feel like a bruise, even though there isn't one. Some of the tender points are around the neck, back, arms, elbow area, knee area, and ankles.

I have them in all the places mentioned. In a lot of people including me, it feels like flu symptoms because of the aching all over. There are other symptoms that may go along with this syndrome, such as fatigue, which is a big one,Restless Leg Syndrome, severe to light headaches, depression, sleeplessness, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome just to name a few. Not everyone has the exact same symptoms, but these are the most reported by the sufferers. It is more prevalent in women than men. Some people may have had it for years before they were actually diagnosed, because there wasn't information in the medical field about Fibromyalgia, and most doctors thought it was in their patient's head. But things have changed now, and FDA is now recognizing it as a true condition that affects many people in the world, and the sufferers are getting quicker diagnoses and better treatment for it. Doctors are now prescribing

a lot of their patients certain depression medications which actually helps with their pain. Plus certain pain killers to help manage their pain as well. And I would like to add that more and more Fibro patients are now able to draw disability insurance. I may look into that one day, but not now because I have adequate income and am able to work from home.

This information I just gave is in my own words, and I am not a professional in this field, except for having the condition and experiencing it for myself may make me somewhat qualified. :)

But for more professional information on this syndrome here is the link to the NFA (National Fibromyalgia Association).

(Link is at top of this page)

But I wanted to blog about it personally to share my experience in all the ways it has affected me, and what I'm trying to do about making it better and maybe get healed entirely.

I am on some pain medications presently, but I believe exercise will greatly improve my Fibro. Now, I am not particularly fond of exercise, and if I do start an exercise program, I have a hard time sticking with it. I just can't seem to keep a commitment to it-maybe because I'm lazy :) or it is hard to exercise when you're in pain. But I have been researching and getting educated about Fibromyalgia to learn all I can about it. And one of the things I keep coming across is how important exercise is for this condition. I have done some walking, which is great-about a mile each time, but it's not on a regular basis.

Then about a month ago I started to desire riding a bicycle again. I have done it before-my husband and I, but it has been about 10 years ago.

I've just kept thinking about it quite a bit for the last month. I told my husband, Lowell about my new urge to ride again, and how I thought it could help my Fibro. Well, he's pretty active, even at 62, and said yes, he thought it would be cool to start riding again. The only thing was, we no longer owned any bikes, so we had to research on the net about the best bikes for our kind of riding, which is road riding and on paved trails. Mountain biking isn't for us, as least not at this point and time. We ended up just going to Walmart and purchasing inexpensive road bikes. Mine is a hybrid and is a easy bike to ride. But we plan to get better quality bikes later when we become more advanced in our riding skills. I say that because I am terribly out of shape, which has made the riding very hard for me-ie-huffing and puffing trying to make it up a short incline, with my heart beating wildly! It's definitely good aerobic exercise! And since I gained back 20 freaking pounds of the 65 I lost a couple years ago, it made me even more out of shape. UGH!

I really loved bicycling when we did it before so I am confident that this is an exercise program I can stick with. My doctor and I talked about exercise for Fibro, and she is definitely for it. I haven't told her about the bike riding yet, and I think she will be proud of me, especially when she sees how much weight I have lost doing it. I haven't weighed myself yet. But my kids have noticed that I've lost weight. My home scales are synchronized with my doctor's scales so I know they are accurate. I have also gotten more benefits from bike riding just since the month or so we started. I have more energy! And that is wonderful since I have had fatigue with my condition, and haven't felt like doing much of anything, except what I absolutely have to--taking care of my disabled son, who is 27 years old, and lives with us. I will blog on him sometime also.

And another thing biking has helped me with is depression. So I am feeling much better in a lot aspects of my life. Please say a prayer for me that I will be consistent in my new exercise program and hobby. Bye for now, friends, and may God smile upon you today!

Bicycling as my New Hobby

Technorati Tags: bicycling,aerobic ecercise,Fibromyalgia,fun hobbies,bike trails,overweight,losing weight,crochet,knitting

Have you thought about taking on bicycling as a hobby? I recently purchased a new bike just for the fun of riding, but soon discovered it had other benefits as well. I have been loosing weight at a rapid speed! Now, I have been overweight approximately 40 pounds, so I definitely need this weight loss, for my health as well as making me feel better. I have already logged several miles cycling.

The second day we rode(my husband and I) we went all over our town and ended up riding 12 1/2 miles. I've read that it's better to start out slow and work your way to farther miles, and I fully intended to, but I was having so much fun and exploring roads I have never traveled on by car, that I forgot how far away we were from home. So we had to peddle our way back, and by the time we got home, I was exhausted. I have posted before about my Fibromyalgia , in which one of the symptoms is fatigue. So I overdid it, and had to rest for 4 days before I went out again. Then I kept my mileage down to half that amount. Our next big adventure was at a bicycling trail near us. The trail is 6 1/2 miles long, and it doesn't circle around, so you have to turn around at the end of it and come back to where you started/parked your car. We decided to ride the whole trail, which actually meant we rode for 13 miles. It wasn't as much fun that day because we were on a time schedule, so I peddled as fast as I could to hurry up and get back. I was totally exhausted after that ride and had to rest for 3 days before the next outing. I do like cycling as a good way to get fit, because it's a sit down exercise! Not to mention it's fun--remember bike riding as a kid? I take my water bottle with me, of course, and we have head and tail lights installed on our bikes, plus an odometer/mileage gage. I feel like it will be a good exercise program for me, as I am a self confessed couch potato! Well, what do you expect from a crocheter, knitter, and having Fibromyalgia to boot? But don't get me wrong. As I'm huffing and puffing up those hills on my bike, I can feel my heart pounding, I sweat like a pig, and my gasping for air strongly indicates I'm getting some good aerobic exercise!

Do you have a bicycling experience you would like to share with me? I would love to hear from you. Please add your comments.

Always check with your health provider before starting an exercise program.

Hugs and happy riding!

My Doc had me go through a few tests to eliminate MS and other diseases first.

Very costly with no insurance. One more test and that is clear THEN they will test

me for Fibro. Allot of tests. This last one which I'm saving up for is the muscle electric shock

thing. I take pain pills everyday and still hurt but I can handle it. I'm glad you are telling about

what you are going through. I'll let you know what my Doc says next.

I was told by my doctors that I have fibro four years ago. It is not a good thing to have but somehow I have managed. I get very tired and do have to take rest. I have taken several medications for the pain but found that nothing really works so I just take motrin. Wishing you happy and pain free days.

Good Morning from Ontario, Canada, Just dropped by to say hello. Hope you have a wonderful day. Glad to hear you have taken up bike riding again. It is one of my favorite things to do and yes it is a fun way of exercising.

We have a wonderful water front trail that goes through our small city, along the the Moira River that leads into the Bay of Quinte. It is very scenic and I love to take my camera with me and alot of the photos on my space are those I have taken while out walking or biking the trail.

I love to capture the Beauty of God's Creation that surrounds us and can be found almost everywhere if we stop , look and listen, including our own back yards.

I wish you well and when The Spirit leads I will pray for you. Keep up the good work , sounds like you are doing some good things and I know it is not always easy when struggling with health issues.

Blessings, Dianne :)

Hello, I stopped by from a mutual friends blog. Oh I would love to flood you with questions as I need to go to Doctor again. So many people in my area have Fibro and some on disability. Did they put you through many tests to eleminate MS and MG? I just have to ask as the Drs. want to do these and I have no health insurance. Bummer. They told me I'd have to have these tests to rule them all out before testing for Fibro. Sorry I went on an on. Nice to meet you and I hope we become friends.

Introducing Myself

I have enough going on now, and my whole life to write a book. It would probably be pretty good, but I'm not a real writer, just an amature, so I'll have to be content with writing a blog. And that's not really easy either.

I have alot of interests, and I plan to share some of them here. I feel that it would be a shame to not share about my life because it is very dramatic, and worthy of the time I would spend doing so. And I'm hoping my readwers find it worthy of their time to read. Although alot of the things that happened in my life is admittingly embarrassing , so it is a decision I am not taking lightly.

Lets see, to paint a picture of who I am I feel that I should describe myself by my interests, talents, and some of my favorite things.

I like to decorate my home, and my style is eclectic; each room has a different theme. My living room looks like you're on a saffari. I have animal print everywhere-rugs, pillows, lamps, candles. Right now my devan and loveseat is black, I have a big, leopard print rug in front of the couch, zebra print lamp, 2 small leopard print rugs, zebra candles, an elephant, a girafe, and various animal print candles sitting around, and several animal print pillows laying around by the fireplace and tv area, plus saffari aninal pictures hanging on the wall.

My bedroom is victorian--pink mostly, with beautiful rose wallpaper and pink shelves with little victorian dolls on them. The bedding matches the color scheme.

My main bathroom looks you just stepped into an ocean. The whole theme with the beach, shelves resembling ocean waves, candles, and some actual sand and seashells in a large bowl. The shower curtain has fish everywhere, of course.

The kitchen isn't finished yet, but we want to make it a 50's theme. We painted a portion of the walls red, and the rest beige-which could possibly change. We have various 50ish decorating objects sitting on a top shelf. We plan to get new floring, appliances, and countertops. Our main colors will be red and black. I have a cute, oldfashion radio that looks like an old jutebox--and it still works. We got it at a antiques store.

My favorite colors are pink, cream, and royal blue. I have 5 grown kids, and 6 grandchildren, with 1 on the way. I have been married for 28 years to my second husbund. I was married to my 1st husbund for 8 years. At this time my kids are 38, 31, 27, 24, and 20.

My interests include The Sims2 pc and video game, crocheting, knitting, gardening, decorating my home, blogging, and my new hobby, which is bicycling. I'm very excited about that one, and I plan to do some blogging on it.

I have Fibromyalgia, which is a syndrome that cause pain in the muscles spred throughout the body. I'll be blogging on that also.

And last, but not least, I am a born again christian since 1975. My relationship with Jesus Christ is the most important part in my life, and I will be sharing about that, as well.

So, thats basically me, and I plan to share about my growing up years, and young adult stage in my life. I'm looking forward to sharing with my readers about these things and I hope they will enjoy reading. It will probably get personal, but I feel confident enough to share.

My First Blog at Blogger

Well, I joined Ravelry a couple days ago-a Knitting and Crocheting community. Almost everyone is blogging there, so I thought I better get one going too. Actually I have been blogging on My Space page, but I wanted to start one here too. I have only been knitting about 10 days! I have been hanging out at Knittinghelp.com-where I found out about Ravelry-.KH really helped me alot. They have gret videos there which is how I learned. So I really thank them.

I started crocheting 31 years ago but didn't do it consistantly. I have only been consistant the last 3 years, I have made an afghan, several scarfs, several slippers, place mats, purses, hats, and a couple doilies--not the real fine thread kind.

I am looking forward to when I can get faster in my knitting. It seems to go soooo slow. Thats why I have only completed 1 project. But I am working on 3 projects right now, but mostly I'm trying to get the dishcloth done so I can say yay! another project finished!
I will have to use my daughter's digital camera to take a picture of my finished projects, although since some were crocheted for someone else, I'll have to skip those. I just hope I can remember the color yarn etc I used on some of them.
